About Hemant Rao
Hemant Rao is a singer/songwriter originally from Montreal who spent 20 year in Vancouver and has recently relocated back to Montreal. As a child he studied classical violin from the age of seven and started playing guitar by the age of ten. He graduated from McGill with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked as an engineer in jet engine design for two years but his heart brought him to Vancouver where he pursued his musical career. Four years ago he travelled to NYC and played at Arlene's Grocery on the Lower East Side as well as the Lion's Den in Greenwich Village. Three years ago in July he completed his first US west coast tour, starting in Seattle and wrapping up in San Francisco. The tour was a great success and he is planning a second tour to cover Washington and Oregon in the near future. Two years ago Hemant returned to Seattle to play both the Skylark Cafe and the Rendezvous Jewelbox Theatre. Hemant also returned to NYC to play two renown singer/songwriter venues, Rockwood Music Hall and Googie's Lounge Above the Living Room. He has also had the opportunity to play two sets at the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle.
Hemant's performances are all about "living the song" and his recordings have been compared to the likes of George Harrison. The third album was just completed in August 2013, mixed by Shawn Cole and Mark Angly at Fadermaster studios in Vancouver. The album is stylistically broad with a strong DIY approach including string sections arranged and multitracked with his childhood violin!
Hemant now lives in Montreal where he is looking forward to playing new venues and making new friends and fans.
